Born in Queens, New York City, and nurtured in the vibrant cultural landscape of Trinidad, Jamal Scott's journey into the makeup world is a fusion of diverse influences that have shaped his unique artistic perspective. His introduction to the transformative power of makeup began during his upbringing in Trinidad, where he discovered a fascination and found solace in experimenting with colors and textures, using his mother's makeup as his canvas.
Jamal's time working at MAC Cosmetics ignited his deep-seated love for makeup. It was here that he honed his skills and refined his techniques, immersing himself in a brand known for its innovation and inclusivity.
However, it was Jamal's apprenticeship under the legendary makeup artist Diane Kendal that truly elevated his career. Under Kendal's mentorship, Jamal absorbed invaluable knowledge and techniques, refining his craft and developing his own distinctive style. In recent years, Jamal has collaborated with creative leaders Mario Sorrenti, Fabien Baron, Karl Templer, Craig McDean, Alastair McKimm and Guido Palau. He has worked with major brands including Marc Jacobs, Mugler, Balmain, Mango, Nars, and Zara, and high-profile talent such as Kaia Gerber, Doechii, Naomi Campbell and Anok Yai.
