Ruben & Sina Östlund

Director & Art Director

Ruben Östlund is a Swedish writer and director celebrated for sharp, socially attuned satires that interrogate modern behavior and morality. His films transform ordinary situations into darkly comic social experiments, exposing the anxieties, contradictions, and performances that shape contemporary life.

Östlund has gained major international acclaim with “Force Majeure” (2014), “The Square” (2017), and “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) - the latter two earning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, placing him among a handful of directors in history to win twice. “Triangle of Sadness” (2022) went on to receive three Academy Award nominations and sweep the European Film Awards, winning Best Film, Director, and Screenwriter. He later served as President of the Jury at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and is a recipient of Sweden’s King’s Medal in Gold, honoring his contributions to national and international cinema.

Since “Triangle of Sadness” (2022), Östlund has worked closely with his wife, photographer and creative partner Sina Östlund, whose experience in the fashion industry informed key elements of the film’s world and characters. Sina now serves as artistic director across his projects, shaping their visual aesthetics and conceptual tone. Together, they worked on his new film “The Entertainment System Is Down” in 2025, widely regarded as their most ambitious production to date.
